Rootbound Crag

Rootbound Crag was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Magic 2011 core set, released in July 2010. It belongs to a cycle of 'check lands' that provide players with flexible mana sources by checking for the presence of basic land types already on the battlefield. This design was intended to offer mid-game stability for multicolored decks while ensuring players had to make careful choices about their land sequencing early on.

The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Véronique Meignaud, who was tasked with capturing the rugged, overgrown aesthetic of the card's dual nature. Her painterly style, characterized by soft textures and ethereal lighting, was well-received by the player community for providing a distinct visual identity that separated these utility lands from the more standard, literalist landscape art common in that era of the game.
