Provenance

Where it came from

Rootbound Crag was originally released as a dual land in the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2017. As part of a cycle of lands that enter the battlefield tapped unless you control a basic land of the appropriate types, it was designed to provide color fixing for aggressive and mid-range decks in the Standard format. This particular version is a promotional printing featuring alternate art, released as part of the set's promotional offerings to highlight the mesoamerican-inspired aesthetics of the plane of Ixalan.

The artwork for this version was commissioned to emphasize the lush, primal environment of the plane, depicting the jagged landscapes and volcanic geology that define the region. Artists for the Ixalan set were tasked with blending traditional fantasy motifs with the bold, earthy color palettes associated with jungle exploration and ancient ruin themes. Upon release, the land was well-received by players for its utility in competitive play and its visually striking departure from the standard topographical illustrations typically found on basic utility cards.
