Rootbound Crag

Rootbound Crag was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 2007 set Lorwyn as part of a cycle of dual lands designed to reward players for controlling specific basic land types. The card functions as a rare land that provides either red or green mana, entering the battlefield tapped unless the player reveals a mountain or forest from their hand. This mechanical design intent was to provide mana fixing for two-color decks while balancing the powerful benefit of early-game access to both colors.

For the 2023 Magic: The Gathering - Doctor Who collaboration, the card was reprinted as entry number 511 in the collector lineup. Illustrated by Jeremy Paillotin, this version reimagines the landscape to align with the aesthetic of the science fiction series. Paillotin’s design choice captures a sense of rugged, alien wilderness consistent with the show's penchant for diverse planetary locations, aiming to ground the mechanical utility of a dual land within the thematic framework of the Doctor's travels across time and space.
