Where it came from
Ruff, Underdog Champ was released as part of the Mystery Booster playtest card set in 2019. These cards were created by Wizards of the Coast for use in the Mystery Booster draft environment, intended to function as a playful, experimental nod to mechanics and card designs that would not typically appear in standard, tournament-legal Magic: The Gathering sets.
The design of the card leans into the lighthearted, 'un-set' spirit, utilizing a silver-bordered aesthetic that prioritizes fun and unconventional interaction over strict rule adherence. While the specific artist is not credited in the traditional sense on the card face due to the nature of these playtest placeholders, the design is a classic example of the development team’s internal brainstorming process, showcasing the creative freedom allowed when designers explore ideas outside the constraints of competitive play.
