Where it came from
Ruff, Underdog Champ was released as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards set in 2021. These cards were distributed exclusively within convention-edition Mystery Booster display boxes, serving as a playful nod to the internal R&D process at Wizards of the Coast. Designed to mimic the aesthetic of test prints, these cards feature the classic 'playtest' watermark and were intentionally excluded from tournament legality, allowing for experimental mechanics that defy standard game rules.
The card was conceptualized and illustrated by the Magic: The Gathering design team to provide a humorous look at high-energy creature concepts. By utilizing the 'playtest' frame—which eschews traditional set symbols and formal card borders—the designers sought to capture the atmosphere of an internal development session. Upon release, the card was well-received by collectors who value the niche, meta-narrative appeal of these prototype-style cards within the broader history of the game.
