Where it came from
Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, first debuted in the 2013 Dragon's Maze expansion as a mythic rare creature. Designed to embody the aggressive, dual-natured philosophy of the Gruul Clans on the plane of Ravnica, the card depicts the two-headed giant Ruric and Thar, who serve as the guild's symbolic leaders. The character was created to represent the primal, anti-civilization fury of the Gruul, with its game mechanics penalizing opponents for casting non-creature spells, reflecting the guild's disdain for structured magic and artifice.
The specific version released in the 2018 RNA Guild Kit features updated frame treatments and was included as part of a specialized product line designed to celebrate each of the ten Ravnican guilds. The card retains the iconic original illustration by Greg Staples, whose work is known for its moody, high-contrast style that emphasizes the rugged and imposing nature of the two-headed giant. The design remains a staple for players who enjoy 'Stax' or 'punisher' archetypes, prized for its ability to enforce a restrictive pace of play during multiplayer games.
