Where it came from
Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, was originally introduced in the 2013 Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a legendary creature representing the dual-natured leadership of the Gruul Clans, the character embodies the faction's philosophy of raw, chaotic strength and its rejection of civilization. The artwork for the Masters 25 edition, illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, emphasizes the imposing, two-headed physicality of the ogre warrior, capturing his role as an enforcer who punishes those who rely on non-creature spells.
The Masters 25 set was released in 2018 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Magic: The Gathering, featuring a curated selection of iconic cards from throughout the game's history. Ruric Thar was included as part of this celebratory set to provide a staple commander and powerful midrange threat that highlights the game's evolution of creature-focused gameplay. Within the community, the card is recognized for its ability to dictate the pace of a game, forcing opponents to rethink their strategies when playing against green and red decks.
