Where it came from
Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, was first introduced in the 2013 Magic: The Gathering set Gatecrash as a legendary Ogre Warrior representing the Gruul Clans. This specific iteration, appearing in the 2022 Double Masters set, serves as a high-end reprint designed for the secondary market and collector appeal, featuring a unique, stylized art treatment distinct from the original character illustration by Greg Staples. The card embodies the Gruul philosophy of reckless aggression, punishing players for casting non-creature spells to force a combat-focused playstyle.
The Double Masters 2022 release was positioned as a premium set, emphasizing reprints of powerful and iconic cards to support both draft environments and long-term collections. The design team focused on recontextualizing established legends within a metallic, borderless, or foil-etched aesthetic to heighten their visual impact. The inclusion of Ruric Thar highlights the enduring popularity of 'Gruul Smash' mechanics, and the card has remained a stable favorite among commander players who value its ability to exert significant board pressure.
