Where it came from
Counterspell was released as part of the International Collectors' Edition in 1993, a boxed set produced by Wizards of the Coast to showcase the early Magic: The Gathering card pool. Unlike standard game cards, these were designed for display and private play, featuring a gold-bordered back that clearly distinguished them from tournament-legal cards. They were intended to give players access to the iconic artwork and mechanics of the Alpha and Beta sets at a time when the game was seeing explosive demand.
The card features artwork by Amy Weber, one of the original artists commissioned during the game's inception. Her illustration, characterized by a stylized, ethereal depiction of magical negation, was a staple of the early visual identity of the game. Collectors value these editions for their high-quality card stock and the distinct square corners that were standard for the set, reflecting an early effort by the publisher to create premium, collectible versions of their foundational card library.
