Where it came from
Sarkhan Vol was first introduced in the Shards of Alara set in 2008 as a Planeswalker card, representing the dragon-obsessed pyromancer from the world of Tarkir. This specific version was released in the 2015 Modern Masters set, a collection curated to provide players with sought-after cards from the game's recent history, allowing them to draft with powerful, high-demand staples that were otherwise difficult to obtain.
The artwork for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering who played a significant role in establishing the visual identity of the Planeswalker card type. His design emphasizes Sarkhan's volatile nature, using aggressive posture and draconic imagery to convey his connection to the dragon spirits, a aesthetic choice that helped solidify the character as a fan favorite during his initial debut.
