Where it came from
Sarkhan Vol was introduced in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shards of Alara. As the first planeswalker card to represent a character obsessed with dragons, Sarkhan Vol was designed to reflect the chaotic, red-green alignment associated with his draconic devotion. The card was created during a pivotal era for the game, as Wizards of the Coast was actively expanding the planeswalker card type, which had debuted only one year prior in the Lorwyn set.
The card’s illustration was rendered by artist Steve Argyle, who aimed to capture the intensity and volatile nature of the character. Argyle’s portrayal established the visual archetype for Sarkhan, emphasizing his jagged armor and the flames that often accompany his magic. Upon its release, the card was received as a key mechanical tool for aggressive midrange strategies, and it remains a foundational entry in the narrative of the Alara block.
