What it does

Whenever a permanent an opponent controls is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on Sarulf.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if Sarulf has one or more +1/+1 counters on it, you may remove all of them. If you do, exile each other nonland permanent with mana value less than or equal to the number of counters removed this way.

Provenance

Where it came from

Sarulf, Realm Eater was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim, a plane inspired by Norse mythology and Viking culture. The card depicts a legendary wolf from the set's central lore, serving as the beast who consumes the realms during the cataclysmic events of the world's cycle. Its design reflects the 'snow' and 'sacrifice' themes pervasive in the set, mechanically representing a destructive force that grows stronger as it clears the board of lesser permanents.

The artwork was illustrated by Daarken, a veteran fantasy artist known for his dark and visceral aesthetic. His depiction of Sarulf captures the creature's immense scale and ferocious nature, emphasizing the impending doom central to the Kaldheim narrative. Upon release, the card gained attention in various competitive formats for its ability to function as a recurring threat that punishes opponents for playing multiple low-cost spells, solidifying its place as a quintessential representation of the set's aggressive environmental storytelling.
