What it does

Whenever a permanent an opponent controls is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on Sarulf.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if Sarulf has one or more +1/+1 counters on it, you may remove all of them. If you do, exile each other nonland permanent with mana value less than or equal to the number of counters removed this way.

Provenance

Where it came from

Sarulf, Realm Eater was originally released as a mythic rare card in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Kaldheim. The set drew heavily from Norse mythology, and the character of Sarulf was designed to embody the apocalyptic Fenrir figure from these legends. The card mechanic, which allows the creature to exile nonland permanents whenever it receives damage, was intended to represent the creature consuming the realms as prophesied in the lore of the Multiverse.

The artwork for Sarulf was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov. His design depicts a massive, glowing wolf emerging from a cosmic landscape, emphasizing a sense of inevitable destruction and ancient power. While the initial printing was specific to Kaldheim, the card was subsequently included in 'The List', a rotating selection of cards from throughout Magic's history that can occasionally be found in Set Boosters. This inclusion allowed players to acquire the card outside of its original expansion cycle, maintaining its presence in the broader secondary market.
