Where it came from
The Saw in Half card was released as part of the Secret Lair x Stranger Things drop in 2021, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and the popular Netflix series. Designed to mechanically represent the Upside Down's influence on the show's characters, the card utilizes a unique 'split' mechanic that reflects the show's dark, supernatural themes. It was created to bridge the gap between traditional fantasy card mechanics and modern pop-culture iconography, marking a significant step in the franchise's strategy to incorporate external intellectual properties into its core gameplay.
The artwork for this specific print, rendered by illustrator Wisnu Tan, was intended to capture a sense of visceral horror and biological distortion consistent with the aesthetic of the series. Upon its release, the card received a divided reception from the established player base; while collectors valued the unique thematic crossover and distinct artistic style, some purists debated the integration of non-fantasy lore into the game's long-standing narrative framework. Nevertheless, it remains a standout piece within the Secret Lair series due to its specialized gameplay utility and distinct visual departure from standard fantasy tropes.
