Where it came from
Saw in Half was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow Commander set, a collection themed around a whimsical, woodland-inspired plane inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures. The card represents the set's focus on synergistic interactions, particularly within the Golgari color identity, which often centers on the recursive use of graveyards and sacrifice mechanics.
The artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, leans into the playful yet slightly dark aesthetic of the Bloomburrow setting. By depicting the literal splitting of a creature to generate two smaller copies, the design emphasizes the tactical gameplay of Magic: The Gathering, where duplicating powerful effects often outweighs the cost of the initial sacrifice.
