Where it came from
The 'Saw in Half' card, numbered 21 in the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set, depicts the iconic X-Men hero Wolverine in a perilous moment. This inaugural Marvel set, produced by Impel Marketing, served as a landmark for the industry by being the first officially licensed Marvel trading card collection to feature original artwork rather than repurposed comic panels, effectively setting a new standard for hobbyist collectibles.
The illustrations for the series were commissioned from several prominent comic book artists of the era to capture the gritty, dynamic aesthetic of the early nineties Marvel aesthetic. The 'Saw in Half' card remains a distinct piece of this set's design legacy, reflecting the era's focus on high-stakes, action-oriented visuals that helped propel the Marvel Universe trading cards into becoming one of the most widely recognized and collected series in the history of non-sports trading cards.
