Where it came from
Scales of Shale was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set titled Bloomburrow. The set is notable for its departure from traditional high-fantasy tropes, focusing instead on an anthropomorphic animal setting inspired by cottagecore aesthetics and folklore. The card was designed to function within the set's specific mechanics, which emphasize creature-type synergies and the tactical use of removal spells in a woodland-themed environment.
The card's illustration was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. In developing the visuals for Bloomburrow, artists were tasked with balancing the cute, small-scale nature of the setting with the inherent dangers of the wild. Prima’s work on this piece reflects this duality, portraying an imposing, elemental-style lizard creature that aligns with the set's themes of natural power and the cycle of predation within the forest.
