Where it came from
Capsize was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce mechanics like buyback, which allowed players to return a card to their hand after casting it. This card, specifically, became a staple in control decks due to its ability to bounce any permanent back to its owner's hand, offering significant tactical flexibility.
The card features artwork by artist Donato Giancola, known for his masterful use of light and oil painting techniques. His depiction of a ship caught in a turbulent, magical sea captures the card's theme of disruption and upheaval. Upon its release, the card was widely praised by the competitive community for its utility, cementing its status as one of the most recognizable blue spells of the late 1990s.
