Provenance

Where it came from

Scroll Rack was first introduced in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Tempest. This set marked the beginning of the Rath Cycle, a narrative-driven block that introduced players to the Phyrexians and the plane of Rath. The card was designed as a rare artifact to provide players with a unique form of deck manipulation, allowing them to cycle through their deck for specific answers by trading cards from their hand for those in their library.

The artwork for the original printing was created by artist Anthony S. Waters. Waters utilized a rich, ornate style to depict the mechanical nature of the artifact, fitting the dark, industrial aesthetic of the Tempest set. Upon release, the card was received as a powerful utility engine, particularly in formats where hand and deck management were critical to competitive success, cementing its status as a sought-after staple in the game's long history.
