Where it came from
Search the Premises was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to introduce cards directly into the Modern format, blending new mechanics with nostalgic callbacks to the game's expansive history. This white enchantment functions as a political tool in multiplayer formats, discouraging aggressive attacks by rewarding the controller with clues whenever a creature is declared as an attacker.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who captures the theme of investigative scrutiny through a detailed, high-fantasy aesthetic. The design goal was to provide white with reactive card draw, a long-requested utility for the color in Commander play. Upon release, it was received as a flavorful, albeit niche, utility piece that excels in group-hug or defensive control archetypes rather than competitive, high-speed environments.
