Where it came from
Search the Premises was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 set, specifically tied to the Lorehold Legacies deck. This card was designed for the multiplayer Commander format, where it serves as a defensive enchantment intended to discourage opponents from attacking the player too aggressively. By imposing a tax of two life for each creature that attacks you, it provides a political deterrent that fits within the white color identity's penchant for taxation and board control effects.
The artwork for the card was created by Volkan Baga, a prolific illustrator known for his work across the Magic: The Gathering catalog. Baga’s aesthetic for this piece emphasizes the scholarly, archaeological theme of the Lorehold College, depicting an intense investigation that aligns with the card’s mechanical focus on searching and tactical observation. Upon release, the card was well-received by Commander players for its ability to provide incremental value and discourage combat-heavy strategies in a casual multiplayer environment.
