Sejiri Refuge

Sejiri Refuge was originally released in the Zendikar expansion in 2009, designed as part of a cycle of allied-color lands that provide a utility-based entry into the game. The card serves as a 'refuge' that enters the battlefield tapped while granting the player a small life gain, reflecting the exploration-heavy, adventurous theme of the Zendikar plane. It was later reprinted in the Commander 2018 set to provide players with accessible mana-fixing options for multiplayer formats, maintaining its role as a functional, low-rarity utility piece.

The artwork was commissioned by artist Ryan Pancoast, known for his ability to blend traditional painterly techniques with the high-fantasy aesthetic required for Magic: The Gathering. Pancoast was tasked with depicting the crystalline, mountainous terrain of the Sejiri region, aiming for a sense of isolation and refuge consistent with the card's mechanical function. Upon release, the card was received as a standard utility land, valued by budget-conscious players for its consistent ability to smooth out mana bases while offering a minor defensive buffer against aggressive strategies.
