Provenance

Where it came from

Selvala's Stampede was released in 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Conspiracy: Take the Crown. Designed for a multiplayer draft environment, the set focused on political maneuvering and social gameplay mechanics. The card represents a pivotal moment for the character Selvala, a pariah-turned-leader from the plane of Fiora, who calls upon the wild creatures of the Paliano region to defend the city against the machinations of the conspiracy plots central to the set's narrative.

The artwork was illustrated by Matt Stewart, who sought to capture the kinetic energy and overwhelming scale of the titular stampede. Stewart focused on the composition of the creatures breaking through the urban architecture to highlight the contrast between Selvala's connection to nature and the rigid, manufactured society of the High City. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its high-impact potential in Commander and casual multiplayer formats, where it serves as a quintessential green 'big mana' spell.
