Where it came from
Semblance Anvil was originally introduced in the 2004 Mirrodin expansion, designed as an artifact that allows players to reduce the cost of spells by exiling a card from their hand. This retro-frame version was released as part of The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts sub-set in 2022, a collection curated to celebrate the mechanical and thematic history of artifacts within Magic: The Gathering. The card’s design evokes the industrial, metallic aesthetic of the plane of Mirrodin, emphasizing themes of resource management and efficiency.
The retro-frame treatment for this printing was intended to pay homage to the classic card borders used during the game's early years. By applying this visual style to cards from more recent sets, the design team aimed to provide collectors with a nostalgic aesthetic while maintaining the mechanical functionality required for modern play. This version has been well-regarded by collectors who appreciate the juxtaposition of contemporary card design with the quintessential, clean border style of the 1990s.
