Provenance

Where it came from

The Serra Avenger was originally released in the Time Spiral set in 2006, but this specific version was issued as a promotional card for the 2006 Champs and States tournaments. These events were key regional competitive staples in the Magic: The Gathering organized play circuit, designed to reward local tournament participation with exclusive, foil-treated versions of popular tournament-viable cards.

The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, a veteran illustrator known for his work on The Sandman comic series. Dringenberg’s design for the Avenger emphasizes a melancholic, ethereal aesthetic that contrasts with the traditional depiction of Serra angels, reflecting the set’s themes of fractured timelines and a crumbling multiverse. It was well-received by players for both its striking, grim visual style and its high efficiency in competitive White Weenie deck archetypes.
