Where it came from
Urza's Factory was released as a promotional card for the 2006 Magic: The Gathering 'Champs' tournament series. Distributed to players who participated in these local-level competitive events, the card served as a thematic bridge between the game's competitive circuit and the established lore of the Urza block, which centered on the legendary artificer Urza and his sprawling mechanical installations.
The card features artwork by Franz Vohwinkel, who rendered the factory with the industrial, metallic aesthetic characteristic of the Urza cycle. By depicting the facility as a land capable of spawning Assembly-Worker tokens, the design was intended to reward long-term, mana-intensive strategies. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its utility in control decks, eventually seeing play in broader formats like Pauper due to its ability to generate consistent value.
