Where it came from
Serra the Benevolent was originally introduced as a planeswalker card in the 2019 set Modern Horizons, designed to embody the mythic figure of Serra, the creator of the plane of Serra’s Realm. In the Magic: The Gathering lore, Serra is a figure of profound compassion and light, and the card's mechanics were built to reflect this by providing protection for the player and generating angelic support. The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a ethereal, glowing art style that has since become a hallmark of his depictions of divine figures within the game.
This specific iteration appears as number 17 in the Mystery Booster 2 set, which serves as a curated retrospective release. The design for this version carries over the original illustration while utilizing the modern card frame aesthetics favored by Wizards of the Coast for special editions. Within the community, the card is recognized both for its role in 'white-weenie' deck archetypes and for the narrative weight it carries as one of the few cards to depict a character so central to the game’s early foundational mythology.
