Serra the Benevolent Emblem

The Serra the Benevolent Emblem was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons Token set, a unique expansion designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format. The emblem serves as a mechanical aid for the planeswalker card Serra the Benevolent, providing a recurring protective effect that prevents players from losing the game as long as they control an angel. It was created to streamline tabletop play, ensuring that complex board states resulting from high-level planeswalker abilities remain clear and manageable for all participants.

The visual design of this token draws upon the classic aesthetic of Serra, a foundational figure in Magic: The Gathering lore representing peace and protection. Illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, the emblem features ethereal, luminous iconography that aligns with the established visual language of the Church of Serra. Villeneuve’s work on this piece was well-regarded for its ability to convey a sense of divine permanence, effectively capturing the serene yet powerful nature of the card's ultimate ability within the game's broader narrative framework.
