Where it came from
Setessan Training was released in Core Set 2021 as a common green enchantment in the Aura subtype. The card reflects the lore of Theros, specifically the city-state of Setessa, a society defined by its reverence for nature and its emphasis on communal strength and physical prowess. The design serves a functional role in gameplay as a combat trick that boosts a creature's power and toughness while granting it trample, mirroring the disciplined, aggressive martial training practiced by the warriors of the Setessan archons.
The artwork for this card was provided by Chris Rahn, a prolific illustrator for Magic: The Gathering known for his dramatic lighting and clean, painterly style. His depiction captures a moment of intense athletic preparation, grounding the magical effects of the enchantment in the visceral reality of a training regimen. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid utility piece for Limited formats, appreciated by players for its efficiency and thematic alignment with the green color identity.
