Where it came from
Setessan Training was released in early 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned players to the plane of Theros, a world inspired by Greek mythology where the gods walk among mortals. The card was designed as a common-rarity enchantment, specifically an Aura, intended to reflect the martial culture of the polis of Setessa, where citizens are trained in the wilderness to live in harmony with nature and combat the threats of the Nyx-born.
The artwork, illustrated by Wisnu Tan, captures the essence of the Setessan philosophy by depicting a warrior undergoing an initiation or rigorous practice session. The design sought to provide a functional tool for Limited gameplay, offering both a power boost and a protective keyword to a creature. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency and its ability to trigger enchantment-synergy mechanics that were central to the set's gameplay identity.
