Where it came from
Shaman of Forgotten Ways was released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Dragons of Tarkir. It represents the Sultai Brood, a faction defined by their utilization of necromancy and the preservation of ancestral knowledge. The card was designed to highlight the set's focus on powerful, high-mana creatures and the 'formidable' mechanic, which rewards players for having a significant total power on the battlefield.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the game's visual identity. Briclot emphasized the shamanistic and eerie aesthetic of the Tarkir plane, depicting the figure as a bridge between the living and the spirit realm. Upon release, the card garnered interest from Commander players due to its unique Biorhythm-style ability, which forces players to reset their life totals based on the number of creatures they control.
