Where it came from
Shaman of the Great Hunt was released in early 2015 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Fate Reforged. This set focused on the pivotal history of the plane of Tarkir, exploring the clash between the dragon-worshipping clans and the legendary khans. The card represents the Temur Frontier, a clan characterized by its resilience and adaptation to harsh, frozen mountain environments.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a vivid color palette to highlight the shaman's connection to the primordial beasts of the era. The design intent was to provide the Temur clan with a powerful mid-game threat that combined aggressive combat utility with the ability to draw cards, a mechanic that saw the card find a significant role in professional competitive formats like Standard and Modern during its initial release period.
