Where it came from
Shaman of the Great Hunt was originally released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering expansion Fate Reforged. The card represents a pivotal moment in the set's narrative, set in the ancient, dragon-dominated past of the Tarkir plane, where the Temur Frontier clans worshipped the primordial dragons. The design focus was on the 'ferocious' mechanic, rewarding players for controlling creatures with high power to reflect the aggressive, survivalist nature of the Temur people.
This specific iteration is a promotional version, distributed through official Wizards of the Coast organized play programs. The artwork, credited to illustrator Winona Nelson, utilizes a vibrant, painterly style that emphasizes the shaman’s connection to the primal forces of the wilderness. It was received by the player base as a staple for midrange strategy decks, valued for its ability to both empower friendly creatures and provide card advantage through its triggered ability.
