Where it came from
The Shapeshifter token, designated as collector number 23, was released as part of the Battle for Baldur's Gate set in 2022. This token is specifically utilized in the Magic: The Gathering Commander format to represent creatures created by cards within the set that allow players to create copies of permanents or manifest polymorphic entities on the battlefield. The design serves a functional role, ensuring players have a clear visual marker for board states that frequently shift throughout a game.
The artwork for this token adheres to the aesthetic established for the Dungeons & Dragons crossover series, emphasizing the fluid and eldritch nature of a shapeshifting creature. Illustrators working on these supplemental sets often aim to maintain a cohesive visual identity that complements the specific artistic direction of the Wizards of the Coast design team, focusing on clarity of identity for gameplay purposes while capturing the fantastical essence of the Baldur's Gate setting.
