Where it came from
The Shapeshifter token was released in 2018 as part of the Commander 2018 product line, specifically included in the Nature of the Beast deck. These tokens were designed to serve as physical representations for cards that create or copy creatures, providing players with a clear visual aid during the complex board states common in the Commander format.
The artwork for this particular token was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Staples leaned into a surrealist, amorphous aesthetic, utilizing muted tones and flowing forms to capture the essence of a creature in flux, which received praise from the community for its distinct ability to blend into the thematic ambiguity required of a generic shapeshifter.
