Where it came from
The Shapeshifter token, designated as number 22 in the Battle for Baldur's Gate token set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to support the Dungeons & Dragons-themed expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a token card, it serves a functional role in gameplay, representing a creature created by various spells and abilities within the Commander set. These tokens were designed to offer a visual aid for players utilizing cards that generate shapeshifting minions, reflecting the chaotic and versatile nature of the creature type in high-fantasy settings.
The artwork for this token was commissioned to capture the fluid and ambiguous nature of a shapeshifter, maintaining the aesthetic cohesion of the wider Baldur's Gate product line. It was crafted by the studio's art team to be easily identifiable on the battlefield while echoing the stylistic traditions of modern Magic: The Gathering creature design. The card was widely distributed within set and collector boosters, becoming a standard utility piece for players who enjoy the mechanics of mimicry and transformation in the Commander format.
