Where it came from
Shatter the Sky was released in early 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Theros, a world heavily inspired by Greek mythology, the card was designed to function as a white-aligned board wipe. It serves as a spiritual successor to older cards like Wrath of God, utilizing a symmetrical design that allows players to draw a card if their creatures have significant power, adding a layer of risk-reward mechanics to the traditional reset effect.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her evocative, painterly style. For this piece, Villeneuve focused on the destructive power of the Therosian gods, capturing a moment of divine wrath descending upon the mortal realm. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile staple in competitive formats like Standard and Commander, praised for its balance of high-impact removal and situational card advantage.
