Where it came from
Released in January 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death set, this Island card represents the return to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros. The set was designed to explore themes of the underworld, heroism, and divine favor, with the basic land cards serving to ground players in the aesthetics of this reimagined classical world. These lands are notable for their full-art treatment, a stylistic choice intended to emphasize the vast, atmospheric landscapes of the plane.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned from Adam Paquette, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering. Paquette’s work on this piece draws heavily from Hellenistic visual motifs, utilizing a bright, expansive palette to convey the serenity of the Therosian sea. Upon its debut, the full-art cycle from this set was met with widespread appreciation from the community, largely due to the clean, immersive composition that diverged from the more traditional border-heavy framing of standard basic lands.
