Where it came from
Sheltered by Ghosts is part of the Secret Lair Drop series, a specialized initiative by Wizards of the Coast that offers curated, limited-release reprints of Magic: The Gathering cards. Released as part of the specialized cosmetic drops, these cards are designed to showcase unique artistic interpretations that differ significantly from standard set releases. The drop features stylized, thematic illustrations intended to appeal to collectors who value aesthetic diversity and limited-edition curation within the broader game ecosystem.
The artistic direction for this piece reflects the high-fantasy gothic aesthetic common to the Secret Lair series, aiming to evoke a sense of ethereal mystery. By commissioning distinct artistic styles for these drops, Wizards of the Coast allows illustrators to experiment with visual narrative, moving away from traditional mechanical card art. The card was received by the player community as a highly collectible variant, praised primarily for its artistic departure from the original printing and its status as a premium, artist-focused collectible.
