Where it came from
The Silvergill Adept card, specifically featured as a promotional release in the Rivals of Ixalan set in 2018, centers on the Merfolk tribe central to the plane of Ixalan. The card was designed as a reprint of a classic Merfolk staple, offering card draw synergy for tribal decks during a period when the game was heavily focused on the exploration-themed mechanics of the Ixalan block. Its inclusion in the promotional set provided players with a visually distinct version of the card to celebrate the competitive season.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of the game. His approach emphasizes the sleek, aquatic nature of the Merfolk, utilizing the blue-dominant color palette associated with the faction. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its strategic utility and its role in maintaining the strength of Merfolk archetypes in various competitive formats.
