Where it came from
Launch the Fleet was originally released as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2014, reflecting the set's Greek mythology-inspired setting of Theros. The card features the 'heroic' mechanic, which rewards players for targeting their own creatures with spells, embodying the thematic focus on divine favor and legendary deeds within that block.
The version from the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set features updated art that transitions the card's aesthetic from a classical fantasy setting to the grim, militaristic tone of the Imperium of Man. By repurposing this card for the Commander format, the design team aimed to provide players with a strategic tool that synergizes with the token-focused strategies prevalent in the Imperial Guard-themed decks.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss for its original printing, capturing a sense of dynamic movement and divine intervention. The adaptation for the Warhammer 40,000 set maintains the core functionality of the card while recontextualizing the visual narrative to fit the sci-fi iconography of the tabletop universe.
