Where it came from
Skitterbeam Battalion was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set, The Brothers' War. This set centers on the lore of the conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, legendary artificers whose mechanical creations devastated their world. The card represents a quintessential piece of Mishra's arsenal, emphasizing the set's mechanical focus on artifact creatures and the resource-heavy, industrial warfare that defines the Brothers' War narrative.
The card was illustrated by artist Dmitry Burmak, who focused on capturing the frantic, swarming nature of the battalion. The design mirrors the set's 'prototype' mechanics, where smaller, cheaper versions of massive machines can be deployed early, only for the player to potentially upgrade them into more formidable forms later. It was received by the player base as a strong inclusion for decks emphasizing artifact synergy and aggressive board presence.
