Where it came from
The Skitterbeam Battalion was released as part of the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set, The Brothers' War. This set revisited the seminal conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra, drawing heavily on the aesthetic of industrial antiquity and the mechanical warfare defined in the game's early lore. The card reflects this thematic focus, depicting a squad of modular, insectoid constructs that represent the mass-produced, expendable machines favored by the combatants during this era.
The illustration was rendered by artist Jason Felix, who utilized a sharp, high-contrast digital style to emphasize the metallic, segmented anatomy of the constructs. The design intent was to visually convey the 'meld' and 'token' mechanics of the set, highlighting the concept of mechanical swarms working in unison. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its ability to generate significant board presence, grounding its reception in both its evocative ties to the game's history and its tactical utility within the Brothers' War draft environment.
