Where it came from
Skysovereign, Consul Flagship was introduced as part of the Aether Revolt set in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in early 2017. As a flagship vehicle associated with the Consulate faction, its design reflects the steampunk-inspired aesthetics of the Kaladesh plane, emphasizing intricate clockwork mechanisms and metallic ornamentation. The card was designed to highlight the game's then-new vehicle mechanic, providing a powerful aggressive presence that required a crew to pilot.
The illustration was crafted by artist Jaime Jones, who leaned into the imposing, high-fantasy naval aesthetic characteristic of the set's aerial warships. Within the game's competitive environment, the card gained recognition for its efficiency and ability to exert pressure on the battlefield. The Special Guests reprint series, which features this specific iteration of the card, serves to reintroduce iconic designs to modern players while maintaining the thematic integrity of the original release.
