Where it came from
Skysovereign, Consul Flagship was introduced as a mythic rare vehicle in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering set Kaladesh. Designed to highlight the new vehicle mechanic, which allowed artifacts to become creatures when crewed, the card reflects the industrial, artifice-heavy aesthetic of the plane. It was envisioned as a powerful aerial presence capable of exerting control over the battlefield through its triggered ability to deal damage upon entering the battlefield or attacking.
This specific iteration is a promotional version distributed through the Kaladesh season of Friday Night Magic. Featuring alternate art by Svetlin Velinov, the design emphasizes the imposing scale of the flagship against the vibrant, invention-focused backdrop of the Kaladesh setting. It was well-regarded by players for both its utility in competitive play and its visual contribution to the cohesive, steampunk-inspired art direction of the block.
