Where it came from
Sleight of Mind was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to introduce blue mana's ability to manipulate game mechanics. The Edgar version, colloquially known as Summer Magic, originated from a 1994 promotional print run intended to replace damaged inventory. Due to a variety of distribution errors and a subsequent recall, the set was never officially released to the public, making cards from this run exceptionally rare and sought after by collectors.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Quinton Hoover, reflects the fantastical, slightly whimsical aesthetic of early Magic sets. Hoover was known for his distinct, fluid style that helped define the game's early visual identity. While Sleight of Mind remained a niche utility card in terms of competitive play, the Edgar printing became a centerpiece for collectors due to its unique historical status as one of the most mysterious and elusive releases in the history of trading card games.
