Soltari Guerrillas

Soltari Guerrillas was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It belongs to the Soltari faction, a race of shadow-dwellers from the plane of Rath, characterized by their unique shadow mechanic which allows them to bypass traditional combat interactions. The card was designed to demonstrate the mechanical versatility of the shadow ability, providing a white creature with an aggressive, proactive role that contrasted with the defensive identity typically assigned to the color in earlier sets.

The illustration was created by artist Jeff Miracola, whose style during this period often emphasized the ethereal and gritty atmosphere of the Rath cycle. Miracola focused on the guerilla-warfare nature of the Soltari, depicting the character with a blend of armored protection and stealthy movement. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency and its contribution to the deck archetypes of the era, remaining a notable example of the tactical design philosophy that defined the Tempest set's fast-paced, interactive environment.
