Sphere of Resistance

Sphere of Resistance was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Exodus served as the final set in the Rath Cycle, a narrative arc that introduced high-stakes mechanical complexity to the game. The card was designed to function as a universal tax on spells, forcing players to pay one additional colorless mana for every card they cast, which introduced a powerful tool for controlling the tempo of tournament play.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Doug Chaffee, who rendered the object as an imposing, metallic geometric form suspended in a dark, atmospheric space. Chaffee’s design reflects the stark and utilitarian aesthetic typical of artifacts from the late nineties era of the game. Upon its debut, the card was immediately recognized by competitive players for its utility in disruption-focused deck archetypes, cementing its status as a staple of the Legacy and Vintage formats.
