Thalakos Scout

Thalakos Scout was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion, the third and final set in the Rath cycle of the Magic: The Gathering card game. The set was designed to complete the narrative arc involving the plane of Rath and introduced the 'shadow' keyword mechanic, which represented creatures shifting between dimensions. This creature, a member of the Thalakos race, embodies that design philosophy by utilizing shadow to evade standard combat interactions.

The card features artwork by John Matson, whose contributions during this era often leaned into the atmospheric and surreal aesthetic characteristic of the late nineties expansion sets. As a common card, it served as a functional piece for limited play environments, designed to showcase the set's core mechanics while providing players with a low-mana-cost utility creature.
