Thalakos Scout

Thalakos Scout was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the Thalakos, a race of shadow-dwellers from the plane of Rath, who exist in a semi-phased state that allows them to bypass traditional physical defenses. This card was designed to highlight the 'shadow' keyword introduced in the Tempest block, which restricted combat to only involve other creatures with the same ability.

The artwork was illustrated by D. Alexander Gregory, who rendered the creature in a dark, ethereal aesthetic consistent with the shadow theme of the Rath cycle. Upon its release, the card became a functional staple in aggressive 'shadow' decks due to its low mana cost and evasion capabilities. It remains a representative example of the late-nineties design philosophy that emphasized distinct mechanical keywords to differentiate sets within the game.
