Where it came from
Shivan Reef was originally introduced in the 1997 Alpha/Beta sets as a dual land, representing the volatile, mana-rich terrain of the Shivan region in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card mechanics allow players to tap for either colorless mana or pain-inflicting colored mana, a design intended to offer flexibility at the cost of life. Over decades, it has become a staple of mana bases in various competitive formats, serving as a reliable utility card for multi-colored decks.
The Dominaria United Promo version, collector number 255s, was released in 2022 to coincide with the return to the game's original plane. This specific printing features updated art and the distinctive set symbol associated with the Dominaria United expansion. The aesthetic direction aimed to capture the rugged, volcanic landscape of Shiv, rendered with modern digital illustration techniques to emphasize the environment's harsh beauty and raw elemental power.
